BAD DAYS ARE TO BE LIVED

We Are Terrible at Having Bad Days

Humans are, on the whole, bad at experiencing a bad day. Not bad at surviving one — bad at actually being in it. The moment discomfort shows up, the instinct is to do something about it. Fast. Change the scenery, numb it, distract it, fix it. Anything to get out of the feeling and back to neutral.

That instinct is understandable. I also think it's a mistake.

The Trade Nobody Notices They're Making

Here is the pattern I keep seeing, in myself and in almost everyone: a bad day shows up, and instead of living through it, we do something drastic to end it early. We are not trying to turn the bad day into a good one — that would take real time and real work. We are trying to trade it for something faster and easier: a mediocre day.

That trade feels like relief. It is actually a downgrade.

A mediocre day has nothing to teach you. It's flat, forgettable. You didn't process anything, you just muted it. The bad day is still in there, waiting, because you never actually lived through it — you just changed the channel.

Bad Days Are Not the Malfunction

I think bad days are instrumental to living a full human life. Not incidental to it — instrumental. If you only ever get the good days, or the neutral days, or the days you successfully managed your way out of, you're getting an edited version of being human. You're not getting the whole experience.

The point of a bad day isn't to escape it. It's to embrace what it brings — to actually get comfortable with pain and suffering instead of treating them as errors to route around. That's a different skill than resilience. Resilience is bouncing back. This is closer to staying present for the thing you'd normally run from.

Bad Days Are to Be Lived

So I'm trying to stop treating a bad day like a problem with a fix. I'm trying to just live it — fully, without the drastic pivot, without trading it down for something more comfortable and less real.

Bad days are to be lived.

Still working through this one. If you disagree, or have a better way to sit with a bad day, let's talk.
